What information should I exchange after a car accident?
Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license information, license plate numbers, vehicle registration, insurance information, and basic vehicle details.
Alabama law requires drivers involved in certain accidents to provide identifying information and render reasonable assistance to injured persons. Get the other driver’s name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, tag number, insurance company, policy number, and vehicle make/model. Also write down the location, direction of travel, time of day, weather, road conditions, and any witness contact information. Take photos of insurance cards and driver’s licenses if possible. Do not rely only on the other driver’s verbal statements. Accurate information at the scene can prevent major problems later if the driver has no insurance, provides false information, or denies involvement.
